Learning Time

Kisumu Junior Academy is the pioneer preparatory school to offer the British National Curriculum (BNC) among three institutions managed by Kisumu Education Society. The school traces its foundation to September 1994 when it had a batch of seven students only. That time the curriculum in place was the London GCE, which related closely to that of the Republic of Ireland’s Primary Curriculum for age 5—12. In 2003, the syllabus passed through a paradigm shift---adopting the GCSE and later IGCSE Key Stage 1 and 2 block system of education followed in England and Wales. The primary school phase incepted a Reception Class; a transition stage from where students begin Y1 to Y6 as opposed to Grade 1 to 7, which was there before. Today the enrollment is over 250 with over 30 members of the teaching staff.

Examination bodies in England also changed; transforming from QCA, to QCDA, to the present Edexcel. Such transformations are a common phenomenon in the curriculum evolution, considered a normal review to demonstrate the dynamic nature of school systems. In Kenya, for example, we moved from CPE— which I sat, to KCPE. Changes of this kind have often come with a leap in advancement and general improvements in content and pedagogy. In most cases it ushers in a new structure and set up.

Basing on the popular motto, ‘Your Child is Our Child,’ the parents have often approached the choice of school with a lot of expertise, enrolling their children with us for a purpose. We are in record, having topped the world in subjects and nearly always received top achievers award in Nairobi every year!

Talking of being equipped in learning facilities may sound rhetoric and less convincing. Taking a step to do spot check of our ICT labs, swimming pools, indoor and outdoor sports materials, fields, playthings, not forgetting participation in charity and triumphing over schools in competitions, would definitely provide true image of what I am attempting to put across.

The school will continue to offer this curriculum which undergoes thorough review nearly every three years to keep abreast of ever challenging academic and co-curricula trends as well as remain focused on socio-economic pillars of the digital world, the Millennium Development Goals and the Vision 2030. That’s the philosophy of the ‘Cradle of Success.’
